Melton residents are being asked their views on Taxi and Private Hire Vehicle procedures in the local area.

The Department for Transport issued new Statutory Guidance on Taxi & Private Hire Vehicle Standards focusing on the role of taxi licensing powers and enhanced regulation in protecting children and vulnerable adults.

Following the implementation of the new guidance, Melton Borough Council has proposed a new Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Licensing Policy for the borough.

The new local policy sets out minimum standards, principles and conditions that will be applied when licensing hackney carriages, private hire vehicles, drivers and operators, which are expected to further safeguard vulnerable passengers and increase safety for our residents using their services.

Cllr Alison Freer-Jones, Portfolio Holder for Climate, Access and Engagement, which incorporates Licensing and Regulatory services, said: We are committed to improving local services in the borough and when you get into a taxi you want that assurance that both the vehicle and the driver will be safe. We are proposing a number of changes to our taxi licensing policy which prioritise the safety of the public and would mean improved controls over both the vehicles and drivers operating across the borough. Whether you are a taxi user, driver or operator, it is important we hear from you, so please visit our online consultation and have your say.””

The consultation period opens on Wednesday 17 February 2021 and closes midnight Wednesday 14 April 2021.

To have your say on the proposed Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Licensing Policy visit the current consultations page on our website - www.melton.gov.uk/currentconsultations - and send your comments to licensing@melton.gov.uk before the consultation closes.
