Residents invited to woodland sculpture reveal

Kirby Woods Summer 2024

Residents are invited to Kirby Fields on 18 March 2025 to attend the unveiling of a new sculpture

In January 2024, volunteers and local school children took part in planting 500 saplings at Kirby Fields to create a new community woodland. Schools that attended the event placed their name suggestions in a box and the most popular was picked to become the name of the green space.

Melton Borough Council now plan to unveil a sculpture at Kirby Fields, which will reveal the name and tagline that has been chosen for the woodland by local school children from Long Field Spencer Academy and Sherard Primary School. The unveiling will take place at Kirby Fields on Tuesday 18 March 2025 at 11am.

Alongside the unveiling, 10 additional trees are going to be planted at Kirby Fields. The new trees are a part of 40 that have been donated by Leicestershire County Council as part of their scheme to replenish woodlands and green areas following tree felling due to disease. The remaining 30 trees will be planted across the council’s parks, including 15 at Melton Country Park.

Attendees of the event will be able to see how the woodland has changed and developed since their initial planting last year and will be able to enjoy a tea or coffee with some cake.

Councillor Margaret Glancy Portfolio Holder for Governance, Environment and Regulatory Services said:

“We are pleased to invite residents and volunteers to the unveiling of the new sculpture and revealing the name of this green space. It was great to see so many people attend the planting last year and we hope you can all attend again to see how the area has grown.

“We know that this woodland is in safe hands with the local community and, as it matures, we hope that it not only becomes a space for local wildlife to thrive but a place for residents and future generations to enjoy.”
