Melton welcomes family in resettlement scheme
In July 2021 Melton Borough Council pledged to support the safe resettlement of 2 families as part of the Ministry of Defence led Afghanistan Locally Employed Staff (Afghan LES) scheme, in recognition of the plight of the families affected by the war in Afghanistan and the critical role played by Afghan interpreters and other locally employed staff who worked directly alongside and supported British Forces in Afghanistan for 20 years.
Melton Borough Council is delighted to confirm that this pledge has been fulfilled with the safe resettlement of one family and another due to resettle later this year.
Melton Borough Council has worked with partners to ensure the transition of the families is successful and sustainable and supports their integration as part of our local communities. The Council will manage the properties and tenancy/landlord related matters, working closely with Charnwood Borough Council who, through an established partnership arrangement, will lead on ensuring the families are well supported and empowered to resettle successfully, taking a family centred approach at all times.
There has been an overwhelming amount of positive community spirit from residents and businesses in the borough which will enhance and support the families resettling into the area and we know that many people within our communities have coordinated and provided donations and offers of support.
Cllr Malise Graham, Portfolio Holder for People and Communities commented "I am immensely proud that our authority is the first in Leicestershire to welcome a new family as part of this resettlement scheme. The true passion and commitment to enable the swift and compassionate delivery of this pledge and the overwhelming support from our community has been heart-warming."
Offers of support have been wide ranging and include a donation put together by staff and residents at Gretton Court, together with other donations made via the Office of Alicia Kearns MP such as toys and clothes for the families to welcome them into their new homes.
