Residents invited to experience new and improved leisure facilities
Waterfield Leisure Centre and Melton Sports Village are hosting an official open day to showcase the recent refurbishments and upgrades to the sites.
Residents are encouraged to join Melton Borough Council and leisure operator Everyone Active at both centres on Saturday 17 August.
All activities will be free at both sites between 9am-1pm, including use of the brand-new gym facilities and swimming pool at Waterfield Leisure Centre, which includes an inflatable session at 12 noon that will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
Free soft play sessions will take place at Melton Sports Village at 9am, 10.30am and 12 noon, while in the brand-new studio, Les Mills master instructor Paulina Skladanowska will lead two free group exercise classes, alongside site instructors. These are BODYPUMP from 9am-9.45am and BODYSTEP from 10am-10.45am.
All activities at both centres will need to be pre-booked via the Everyone Active app, website or in one of the centres.
On the day, The Mayor, Councillor Tim Webster will be joined by special guest Richard Kilty, an Elite athlete on Everyone Active’s Sporting Champions scheme who is a member of the Team GB 4x100m sprint relay team currently competing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Together they will officially reopen Waterfield Leisure Centre at 9am before heading to Melton Sports Village to cut the ribbon there.
Richard will be meeting and greeting members of the public throughout the morning as well as setting markers in gym challenges at Waterfield Leisure Centre for the public to compete against.
To celebrate our Olympic athletes, an Olympic Torch from the London Olympics in 1948, which was carried by Councillor Cliff’s grandfather, will also be at Waterfield Leisure Centre for one day only, for visitors to view and take pictures with.
Cllr Pip Allnatt, Leader of the Council, said: “This is an opportunity for residents to try out the new facilities for themselves and see what is now available at the centres.
“Our partners at Everyone Active have done an outstanding job upgrading and modernising the leisure centre and facilities for our residents, making sure they are not only enhanced but protected over the next 10 years. Multiple new facilities have been developed at Melton Sports Village as part of this refurbishment, including the soft play and the health hub; as well as the redesign of the gym at Waterfield.
“Throughout the process we have sought to ensure as many activities as possible can continue to thrive in locations across the borough, so we hope there’s something for everyone to enjoy. I really would encourage anyone that is keen to start getting active or to spend time with family and friends to come and see what’s on offer in the heart of Melton.”
Lloyd Barraclough, Everyone Active’s area contract manager, said: “We are so excited to host this open day and believe the huge programme of free activities will prove big attractions for the local community.
“In Richard, we have an enormously successful athlete who knows the value of physical activity to everyone, no matter what their age, interests, or ability, while his fantastic sporting achievements speak for themselves.
“We cannot wait to welcome local people to the centres to showcase the amazing upgrades that have taken place, providing state-of-the-art facilities that will serve the local community now and for many years to come.”
The extensive refurbishment included extending and enhancing the gym facilities and group cycling studio at Waterfield and installing brand new equipment throughout; installing a brand-new soft play area, developing a new group fitness studio and creating a health hub at Melton Sports Village; and revamping the changing areas and reception suites across both sites and ensuring a sustainable and financially viable future for leisure in Melton.
Alongside this, multiple improvements have been made to the sites to boost energy efficiency, such as investing in new pool covers, with the installation of solar panels to come.
