Council celebrates local volunteers

Volunteer Celebration

Melton Borough Council hosted a special event on the evening of Monday 24 February, to say thank you and to honour the incredible contributions of local volunteers. From keeping our communities clear and safe from litter, to ensuring key places such as our country park can support nature to thrive, through to supporting local communities access vital support and be resilient and prepared in times of need, the efforts of volunteers across the borough make a big difference. Often unseen, the efforts of multiple local volunteers and groups help make Melton a vibrant and welcoming community.

Recognising the significant difference our unsung heroes make; Melton Borough Council took the opportunity to express gratitude to the numerous volunteers whose hard work often goes unrecognised. Their efforts play a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors alike. Supported by funding from the UK Government via the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the council has engaged with volunteers in remote rural areas who are committed to supporting their communities. Initiatives like the Rural Food Hub Network and the planting at Kirby Fields Woodland, along with numerous other activities across the borough, showcased the involvement of many individuals who give their time and expertise willingly.

Volunteers from a range of local organisations were invited to attend the event, providing them with a chance to connect, share their stories, and offer advice and support to one another. The Mayor’s charity, the Belvoir Cricket and Countryside Trust, who 'inspire children to lead happy, healthy, active lives through sport and countryside education' attended. Also acknowledged and in attendance were The Black Horse Community Group, based in Grimston, Friends of Melton Country Park, Melton U3a and the Melton Police Volunteers, among many others.

The event was a tremendous success, featuring a speech from the Leader of Melton Borough Council, Councillor Pip Allnatt, followed by a buffet for the guests. Volunteering plays a vital role in strengthening our communities, and it was a wonderful opportunity for organisations to get together and celebrate this important work.

Cllr Margaret Glancy, Deputy Leader of Melton Borough Council said "It was essential for us that the volunteers, who are the backbone of our community, feel recognised for their invaluable contributions. Time, one of the most treasured resources people have, is generously donated to projects that significantly impact others and this celebration was a time for such work to be acknowledged and say a huge thank you to the volunteers across the borough.”

The Friends of Melton Country Park were one of the groups in attendance and stated that ‘We organise twice monthly volunteer work groups, completing a range of tasks in the park from the planting to litter picking.

Thank you for organising this event, it is good to be recognised for the work that we do on behalf of both the wildlife and the public.’
