6 District councils pull together to respond to road decision
Following the shock announcement that Leicestershire County Council intend to reject £15m of government grant to support Melton’s relief road, 6 of Leicestershire’s District Council Leaders have reacted to the news.
Writing jointly an open letter to Nick Rushton, the Leader of Leicestershire County Council, they have expressed significant concerns about the impact of this proposal.
Cllr Joe Orson, Leader of Melton Borough Council welcomed the support from neighbouring district councils in Leicestershire; “I am very grateful that my fellow Leaders recognise the risk the County Council’s proposal creates to infrastructure funding in Leicestershire. To require district and borough councils to pick up the bill for multi-million pound infrastructure they are responsible for is simply not tenable. We need the County Council to follow through on their commitments to the people of Melton, accept the funding, and deliver the road. I ask all Melton people to sign the petition so we can show County Hall the strength of local feeling, and persuade them to accept the funding. We have 7 days to save the road!”
